because i promised A:

so A's birthday was coming about and she'd posted a list of possible gifts (which, by the way, ended up being totally useless, but anyway), two of which were yoyos. and i thought hey yoyos seem like a good thing to give, plus she was going on about wanting one for yoyo club, so i will check these out! what i hadn't realized that competition quality yoyos are insanely expensive. undersized, metal ones will range from 20-50USD; full-sized metal ones will usually start from 50 - 150USD. the most expensive one i saw was the oxygene TI which cost over 500USD. this then led to checking out the yoyo manufacturers' websites and finding out that almost every large yoyo manufacturer has a 'team', i.e. a group of yoyo-ers that they sponsor in competitions.
AND THEN SUDDENLY I WATCHED SOME 2 HOURS OF YO YO COMPETITIONS. OTL

i'm not going to lie, a good portion of what amuses me about yoyo competitions is that they're all these tiny asian hipster dudes /playing yoyo/. (there are very few girls playing yo yo. not sure why? but there you go).
so here is a list of my favorite players. i should point out my understanding if yoyo-ing is basically nil and my opinions are basically made upon whether what is going on screen looks cool or not. SHALLOW YES but there you go.

Yuuki Spencer
Titles: 2x World Champion, 3x US National Champion
Team: YoYoFactory
Style: 1A

Yuuki Spencer is basically like epitome of the hipster yoyo dude i am talking about. his sideswept perm! his skinny jeans! his black plastic emo glasses! He started competing at, god, 13 yrs old? basically he is like crazy good. Admittedly he hasn't the world championship or the US national title in a while, but he's still considered a ~god~ by a lot of yoyoers. (it also seems to be general consensus that it's less he's gotten worse/everyone else has gotten better and more that he's stopped caring about having to get every. single. step. perfect and is just doing shit for fun. who knows if that's true though man).
anyway, here he is at the 2010 world's. (4th place)

Hiroyuki Suzuki
Titles: 3x World Champion
Team: YoYoJam
Style: ALL (predom. 1A)

Hiroyuki Suzuki (nicknamed Mickey) is that douchebag who wears sunglasses all the time and always seem to be kind of condescending but is really good at what he dos also sometimes a total dork so you forgive him. He wears a pair of shades for every single competition. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. they are currently red but they have changed across the years.
He also currently holds the record for consecutive eli hops (71).
Here he is competing at the 2008 World's in his signature shades + a SILVER BOWTIE (like i said, ridiculous)

Rei Iwakura
Titles: 3x World Champion
Team: YoYoJam
Style: 4A, Diabolo

Rei Iwakura is amazing+ridiculous, frreal. He is always like : D : D when competing and he does dorky dances in between and stuff it is pretty incredible. he fashion can be pretty awful (his terrible orange-brown not-tie-dye outfit from 2008 is both hilarious and painful to look at) but he seems to have mellowed out? to a degree
he's also pretty well known for being able to go through his routines without a single drop (a/o making the bounces seem like deliberate parts of his performance) which is pretty impressive when you're doing offstring yoyo-ing.

here is his 2010 Japan National routine. I LOVE HIS LITTLE JAZZHANDS MOMENTS

Naoto Okada
Titles: 1x World Champion
Team: Fabres
Style: 4A, 5A

Naoto Okada is basically the dude who deposed Rei Iwakura as 1st place in 4A @ the Japan Nationals/World's. It's still up in the air whether this is something that will hold out, though. ?? He seems like a dude who really enjoys yoyo-ing and he, much like rei iwakura, is very good about showmanship and ridiculous dance moves so at least in my opinion he's p. much golden.
his throws as a whole seem much higher than rei's and he tends to do really really long chains of them which is think is totes amazing. he DOES drop once or twice during his routines but is dorky enough in his routine + catches himself fast enough that i forgive him.

here's his winning routine @ 2010 Japan Nationals

Takeshi Matsuura
Titles: 3x World Champion
Team: YoYoJam
Style: 5A, 3A

OKAY SO takeshi does not really fit into the whole skinny hipsters things i had going, but I am putting him here because he is tiny + adorable + amazing, okay. he is 13 and he already has 3 world championship titles under his belt. if that is not impressive i do not know what is.
he does primarily 5A, although he did win a 3A World Title (personally I find his 3A performances kind of lackluster. like, perhaps technically good but he seems super freaked out + unhappy??). I should point out that, despite currently being on team YoYoJam, I believe his 5A yoyo is actually a duncan on account of the counter-weight tech still being under duncan (yoyojam recently managed to get a license on using duncan-type counterweights, though, so his most recent perfs have been with the preproduction of his soon-to-appear signature collection? or something)

but anyway here he is being tiny + fierce

OKAY AND THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT YOYOS. and i now i guess off to studying OR PERHAPS JUST FAFFING ABOUT?? we shall see

ahh I just can't seem to like hiroyuki. I like spencer best overall. Although okada is kind of sad+adorable. I mean. RED BOWTIE? for real.

and you can rapidly obsess like no one else I've ever seen although steph could give you a run for your money. I think she spent 6 hours one night watching glee interviews til 5am.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?
